The visuals for Kanye West’s “The Life of Pablo” continue to drop, with the latest being for “Wolves” as joint project with Balmain.
8/4 UPDATE: The “Wolves” video can be viewed on Tidal now!
7/29 Original story: Today, the video appeared on Kanye’s YouTube page and Balmain’s website as part of the fashion company’s “When Fashion Meets Music” ad campaign.
During the last week Balmain has been posting photos of Kanye, Kim Kardashian West and models for the return of its “Balmain Army.”
In the video, the entire cast is wearing their Balmain outfits from the 2016 Fall/Winter collection. Kim revealed that the video was actually shot after the 2016 Met Gala and the family trip to Cuba so the looks were re-created.
Shot in a NYC studio, the black and white visuals captures the haunting vibe of the “Wolves” song which also features Vic Mensa and Sia. It appears that the two artists shot their parts separately, but maintained the same theme.
The video was directed by Photographer Steven Klein with Creative Direction from Pascal Dangin. It’s cast included models Joan Smalls, Jourdan Dunn, Alessandra Ambrosio, Jon Kortajarena, Ysaunny Brito, Josephine Skriver, Chico Lachowski, Jordan Barrett, Ronald Epps, Sasha Luss, Riley Montana and Dilone.
Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing explained that he contacted Kanye with the idea to combine “Wolves” with the “Balmain Army” in a Vogue Magazine interview.
“I called Kanye and I said, ‘I would love to create a campaign around your music, your lyrics, and your aesthetic,'” Rousteing explained. “I think that’s what is interesting: It is a campaign based on music. That was really important for me.”
“Kanye has a great culture of what he thinks is cool in fashion, and I have my ideas. I think the mix of us made this jacket. Kanye loves denim, I love couture embroidery… mixing my point of view with his point of view made this jacket spectacular,” said Rousteing.
Ye got Balmain to pay for his video and Balmain got a commercial.
